Friday's Stuff/ CRC Wins Big 8

First, a congratulations to Cosumnes River College and coach Tony Bloomfield as the Hawks have won the Big 8 championship in baseball. They defeated Santa Rosa CC, 4-0, in the first game of a twin bill yesterday. Former Pleasant Grove infielder Garrett Heisinger has a key RBI double to lead CRC.

The Hawks played the game at American River College and have had to play all home games at other sites because a new sports facility is under construction on the CRC campus. I have a story with Bloomfield and the CRC team coming out in next Tuesday's Citizen ...

Did you see the story about the Sierra Foothill League being moved this next school year to Division I? It's about time, really. Those schools (Granite Bay, Rocklin, Roseville, Nevada Union, etc.) are just as large in enrollment as the Elk Grove schools and have dominated Division II the past few years.



Where you will see the difference in this move will be competition in baseball, wrestling and softball. Those playoffs are determined by league designations. Up to this point, the only D-I leagues in the North Sac-Joaquin Section have been the Delta Valley Conference, Delta River League and the Monticello Empire League.

Basketball and football playoff brackets are figured by enrollment numbers only.

Interesting that the only representatives voting yesterday at the Section meetings against the proposal were from the SFL, DRL and DVC. ...

Laguna Creek's baseball team almost defeated Elk Grove Friday. Almost.

Zachary Smart was throwing a real solid game for the Cardinals, the game was tied 4-4 in the sixth inning and then the wheels fell off. He had two outs, but had hit Nick Madrigal and walked Derek Hill. Here then was slugger Rowdy Tellez.

Tellez, who at times in recent games seemed to be reaching for pitches out of the strike zone, swung at a pitch up and out and popped it up down the third base line. The Laguna left fielder, who really should have caught the ball was loafing. The third baseman got turned around because it was over his head. The shortstop looked at the third baseman and the ball plopped to the ground.

Madrigal was hustling and scored the go-ahead run, Hill stopped at third and then while the infielders were arguing with each other, Tellez scampered into second base.

Elk Grove went on to win, 6-4. ...
