Former EG Football Player Dies In Traffic Accident

Michael "Mikey" Lyttle, a former Elk Grove High School football player and outstanding young man died late Wednesday night in a traffic accident. He was 25.

According the Sacramento Bee, his speeding sport-utility vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree along Elk Grove Boulevard around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday night.

Lyttle was always the "little" guy on all his Elk Grove Junior Thundering Herd squads, yet was always a tough guy to tackle. He played slotback and running back and for many years was the team's placekicker. His mother, Darlene, was actively involved in the Jr. Herd as was father Tom, who coached most of Mikey's team.

Lyttle, despite his small stature, contributed mightily to the Herd varsity squads in 2005 and 2006. He always was a member of the kickoff squad and not afraid to hit anyone.

Long-time Jr. Herd president Jack Budmark wrote on his Facebook page: "Mike Lyttle was one of the most courageous young man I've had the pleasure to know and coach. Pound for pound Mike always left it all on the field. He may have been one of the smallest players in both youth and high school football but he would hit you like a 200lb linebacker and make you think twice before you ran the football to his side and think you were going to score."

Please leave rememberances of Mikey here on this blog ......

Details of his funeral are pending.

Mikey, we will always remember the joy your brought on and off the field! Your smile was bright enough to light up a football stadium. You were a brother to my son, Joseph Williams. Thank you for the love you shared with him through the many years together. You are loved by many and will be missed dearly.

God Bless you and your family,

Dinah McCain

On behalf of The Velasquez Family we extend our deepest condolences to The Lyttle Family. Mikey was such a wonderful young man. Mikey, coached my son Aaron in 2007.. Aaron really liked Mikey and had such respect for him as a coach. Remembering Mikey on the side lines while I took photos for the Jr. Herd.. Mikey always had such a sweet smile.. just a beautiful person. I can not express enough my heartfelt regrets to hear of his passing. My heart goes out to his family, friends and all the Herd Family because we've lost such a wonderful young man. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.
