EG Wrestlers Win Cal Coast Classic

The Herd wrestlers competed this weekend at the CaliforniaCoast Classic at Aptos High School in Santa Cruz. After a fifth place finish the previous weekend at the Zinkin Tournament in Clovis, this time they showed they were the big boys on the block.

Elk Grove won the team title by a full fifty points over Ponderosa, 238.5 – 188.5.  Jesuit finished sixth in the team standings. More than 30 high schools were represented at this meet. Clovis finished in seventh place while Buchanan was 11th.

The Herd had ten wrestlers place at the Coast Classic. There were only four weight groups where Elk Grove did not place a wrestler in the top eight.

Freshman Jacob Seto was fourth at 106 pounds. Roger Monroe, another freshman, was third and Ennis, fifth, at 113 pounds. At 120, Jesse Arroyo finished in fourth place.

Tonge placed fifth at 126 pounds. Terrell Turner was fifth at 132 pounds.  Sperber finished sixth at 138 pounds. Kaleb Vetterli was fifth at 145.

Holiday Tournaments Galore

There’s no rest for the local boys’ basketball squads this weekend. Just about every team was playing in a tournament.

Elk Grove (6-8 thus far this season) won one game and lost two at the Jaime Angley Hornet Classic at Enterprise High School in Redding.

Laguna Creek (8-4) went 2-1 at the Modesto Christian Tournament this weekend, including an impressive 85-53 win over Deer Valley. Richard Reed had 26 points on the strength of ten-for-19 shooting from the floor.  They have a game against Salesian High School on Monday, Dec. 30.

Pleasant Grove (6-5) played at the Holiday Hardwood Invitational at Westlake High School. They opened the tournament with a rematch of the CIF Division I State Championship game last March against Santa Monica High School. This time Santa Monica won, 66-55.

The Eagles rebounded with back-to-back wins over Granada Hills Charter and San Gabriel Academy.

Sheldon (3-6) lost its first three games at the Under Armour Holiday Classic at Torrey Pines High School.  They are scheduled to play Newark Memorial on Mon., Dec. 30 before heading home for the New Years’ holiday.
