MLK Weekend Results

Franklin High School scored a big 54-51 win over Deer Valley Monday in the Martin Luther King Classic at Cal's Haas Pavilion. Franklin got a huge game from 6-2 junior forward Victor Rustin, who not only scored a team-high 15 points but he helped hold Deer Valley's 6-9 post Marcus Lee to just four points. 

"He's a high-energy and team guy so it's nice to see him have such a big game," said Franklin head coach Jesse Formaker told Maxpreps.Com. "This is a big win for us. We got better as the game progressed."

It game showcased evenly matched teams as neither squad led by more than six points and the score was tied after the second and third quarters. Deer Valley took its biggest lead 48-42 early in the fourth quarter.

But Franklin battled back and took its first lead of the fourth quarter 52-51 on two free throws by Kelton Newman with 50.1 seconds left. After Deer Valley missed a layup, Rustin took an inbounds pass from Newman to score a layup with 17 seconds remaining.

Franklin (14-4) got 14 points by Darin Johnson and 12 by Theo Johnson.  ...



Laguna Creek was defeated by Hiram Johnson, 59-52, Monday.

Bradshaw Christian's girls defeated Pitman, 49-42, as Ashley Jones scored 24 points for the Pride.

Wrestling - Elk Grove's Martin Ramirez and Josh Letuligasenoa each earned second place medals last Friday at the Temecula Valley Invitational Tournament. At the Lloyd C Engel Tournament the Herd's 103-pounder Tristan Scott was named the most outstanding wrestler.
