Wednesday's Notebook/Scoreboard

Franklin's volleyball team defeated Pioneer in four games Wednesday, 25-15, 13-25, 25-16, 25-23. Brenna Leon had 8 kills, 4 blocks and 3 aces. ...

We're nearing the end of the first academic quarter at the high schools. This is important because the athletes we follow must indicate the ability to be students, too. Unfortunately, this is the time of the year where coaches must also coach in the classroom to keep several players eligible to play the rest of the season. Be watching our football teams for there are some big names that struggle with their grades. ....

Girls' golf Wednesday, Franklin won the Delta Valley Conference event at Bartley-Cavanaugh. Here were the team and individual results:

Team results: Franklin 407, Davis 433, Laguna Creek 527, Elk Grove 591.
Individual results: Fong, F, 70; Kaur, F, 73; Masiel, D, 76; Xiang, D, 82; Hardy, F, 87.

In boys' water polo, Jesuit defeated Laguna Creek, 13-4.  In girls' St. Francis beat Laguna Creek, 15-8.

There are several local football teams not playing this week. Elk Grove, Franklin, Pleasant Grove and Sheldon all have byes.

Cosumnes Oaks opens its Sierra Valley League season at Union Mine. The Wolfpack look strong enough to run right through SVL this season, but Liberty Ranch and Vista del Lago both have quality squads.

Laguna Creek will host Jesuit in a non-conference game. The Cardinals need a win to bounce itself into the Delta Valley Conference schedule in a week.

Monterey Trail, who is much better than a lot of us thought before the season, will play at Pioneer High School in Woodland.  Bradshaw Christian plays at Rio Vista.

Florin will likely pick up its first Metro Conference win tomorrow night when it hosts Johnson. Valley is at Rosemont.
