The Bradshaw Christian football team has been known for its
excellent running game almost since the first day the Pride suited up a team
for high school competition. Each year the backs carrying the ball have notched
big stats with large enough numbers for everyone to notice.
Last season the Pride led the state in rushing averaging
more than 430 yards a game.
This year the young man grabbing attention is junior Jacoby
Hawkins. The transfer from Pleasant Grove never got much action on the Eagles’
JV team the past couple seasons. He was also cut from the baseball squad his
freshman year.
But, now at Bradshaw, Hawkins is showing something no one at
Pleasant Grove saw. In the Pride’s season opener last Friday, Hawkins gained
182 yards on only 12 carries and scored three touchdowns. Bradshaw defeated
Maxwell, 42-13.
As a team, the Pride gained 438 yards on the ground in their
season opener.
Bradshaw also fielded its first-ever junior varsity football
team last Friday. They lost to the Maxwell JV, 14-6. …
The high school girls’ volleyball season started Monday with
the annual “Foundation Games.” The results do not count towards a team’s
standings, rather half the gate revenue goes to the Sac-Joaquin Section’s
Scholarship Fund. The same thing happens in the winter with the first set of
games in boys’ and girls’ basketball.
There were 67 volleyball contests played around the Section
Monday. Locally, the matches were Wilton Christian at Victory Christian,
Modesto Christian at Bradshaw Christian, Franklin at Cosumnes Oaks, Kennedy at Elk Grove, Laguna Creek at Florin
and Monterey Trail at Inderkum.
Section officials say last year they handed out $35,000 in
scholarships to 50 student-athletes. ….
After starting his recent stint with the Double-A Midland Rockhounds
three-for-18 at the plate, David Freitas has been on fire with his bat. He’s
hitting .423 over the past ten games for the Oakland A’s affiliate and has
raised his batting average to .341.
Freitas, who played his high school baseball at Elk Grove,
told a friend the day he was traded to the A’s organization Oakland general
manager Billy Beane phoned him saying, “We traded (starting catcher Kurt
Suzuki) specifically for you. We see you playing (with the major league team)
very soon and staying here for a long time.”
David texted me Tuesday night saying he might be sent up next week to the A's, but doesn't know for certain. He's promising me a sit down interview when he comes home to Wilton. …
