Batson had the fastest time in the 100 in all of California his senior year at Laguna, but pulled a hamstring during the preliminaries of the 200 meters of the Delta Valley Conference meet. Though he healed up a few days later, he couldn't qualify for the Sac-Joaquin Section's Division I meet because he didn't place in the DVC.
Most track observers say he was on his way to a state championship that spring in both sprints.
Jordan Glass
It’s been a long season for the UC-Davis Aggies. They are
3-6 in Coach Bob Biggs’ 20th and final year at the helm. Several
losses have been heartbreakers, some wins have been quite gratifying.
There’s just two games left, this Saturday in Cheney, Wash.,
against Big Sky foe Eastern Washington. Then the Aggies conclude the season
Nov. 17 in the annual Causeway Classic against Sac State.
Jordan Glass, Davis’ starting middle linebacker, has had an
outstanding final season, his sixth in college. The former Elk Grove High
School linebacker leads the Aggies with 67 tackles, has a pair of
interceptions, including one for a touchdown and two sacks. His pick-six came
in the game against Montana State where he also had 11 tackles.
Glass graduated from Elk Grove in 2007 and started his
collegiate career at Utah State. He played briefly his freshman year, was a
starter the next season, but fractured his ankle in the third game of the year.
Glass sat out the 2009 season to re-hab the injury, but in
the meantime his defensive coordinator, Mark Johnson, left Utah State and went
to UC-Davis. Glass decided to follow him back to California and has been a key
part of the Aggies’ defense ever since.
Now at 6-2, 240 pounds, Glass has been attracting the
attention of a few pro scouts. Playing in the NFL won’t be new to the family.
His father, John, played briefly for the Raiders and 49ers.
Armstead And Saunders
Arik Armstead had a tackle last Saturday in Oregon’s big
62-51 offensive dual with Southern Cal. The freshman defensive end from
Pleasant Grove High School has played in all nine of the Ducks’ games, coming
off the bench.
His former Eagle teammate, Jalen Saunders, had four catches
for 54 yards in Oklahoma’s 35-20 win over Iowa State last Saturday. He tied an
Oklahoma record the week prior by catching 15 passes in the Sooners’ loss to
Notre Dame.
Armstead’s older brother, Armond, is having an excellent
rookie season in the Canadian Football League. The USC grad, who is also a
defensive lineman, has 43 tackles, six sacks and two fumble recoveries for the
Toronto Argonauts. His final regular season game is this Sunday.
Jr. Mustangs Win Two
Championships
The Monterey Trail Jr. Mustangs’ organization took a pair of
Sierra Youth Football League championships last week. The Jr. PeeWees defeated,
19-8, to win that division’s title. Varick Lewis scored three touchdowns in the
win.
In the PeeWee division, the Jr. Mustangs beat Union Mine,
6-0. Marcus Jones had the game’s lone score. Caleb Ramseur had an interception
in the final minute to seal the win.
Larson Wins Honor
Elk Grove’s Kyle Larson won his first NASCAR title with a
sixth place finish Saturday at Rockingham Speedway. He was the K&N Pro
Series East Champion. It’s a developmental division of NASCAR racing likened to
the minor leagues in baseball.
Larson also won the Sunoco Rookie of the Year honors. The year isn’t over for him. He’ll run the
No. 4 Turner Motorsports Chevrolet in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series
races at Phoenix International Raceway and Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Velocity Wraps Up
Unbeaten Season
The Elk Grove Velocity, an age-12-and-under girls’ softball
team, won the 2012 Down and Dirty Gold Division Tournament last weekend by not
only winning all four games, but outscoring everyone, 39-0.
During the regular season the Velocity was 10-0, outscoring
opponents, 103-31.
