A Glimpse of Fall Football

Franklin is hosting the 7th annual Winning Advantage Team Camp this week at Sheldon High School. Football teams from Elk Grove, Woodcreek, Rocklin, Edison and Franklin have donned the pads and will work out each afternoon between 3 and 5 p.m. Scrimmaging will be each evening between 6 and 7:30 p.m. at Sheldon/Pleasant Grove Community Stadium.

Those sessions are open to the public.

I'll have a story about the camp in this Friday's Citizen. One note worth mentioning, especially for long-time Thundering Herd football fans: the team is returning to blue helmets. It's been over 30 years since Elk Grove's teams have worn blue helmets, but according to head coach Chris Nixon, the team captains bugged him to have the team go with "pearl matte blue" headgear this season.

It is quite unique, however, there's a rumor the gold helmets may not be lost forever. Supposedly when showed the new blues, former Herd star and current Chicago Bear Lance Briggs wasn't impressed. He cut the team a check to buy a set of gold ones, like what he wore in 1997 and 1998 when he was running through everyone for Elk Grove.

The Herd may be the only the team in our area with two helmets. Ought to be fun to see what color combination they'll wear on Fridays.
