by David Clarke

Elk Grove High School sophomore Annastassia Ramirez placed third at the Girls' State Wrestling Championships over the weekend.  She went 5-1 with five pins. Her only loss was to second place Angellica Llanes of Mira Monte in the semi-finals match.

Llanes then lost in the finals match. She is now a three-time state runner-up.
Annastassia Ramirez grabbed a third place medal at the
Girls' State Wrestling championships March 1.

In the consolation semi-finals Annastassia pinned last years third-place wrestler Sabrina Sandoval of Porterville. Then in the third place match she pinned Victoria Smith from Brawley.

Annnastassia finished the year with a 31-3 record losing only to the state champion Lauren Mason from Woodcreek HS twice and the state runner-up.

Mason was the only champion from the SJS/North Section.

Annastassia's brother Martin was a third-place finisher in the boys wrestling championships in 2011. They are one of the few brother-sister combos to medal in the state championships.

Elk Grove finished in 29th place as a team out of more than 200 teams.

Albany HS won the team championship, the first time a team outside of Los Angeles has won the championship.
