Oregon State’s Jake Rodriguez tallied three hits in the Beavers’ 13-2 loss to San Diego Saturday at Cunningham Field. Former Jesuit pitcher Dan Child started for the Beavers and took the loss after allowing seven hits and five runs in 3 1/3 innings.
Rodriguez, the former Elk Grove star, went two-for-four in a 13-5 win over Kansas State in a Sunday game played at San Diego State’s Tony Gwynn Field. Rodriguez also stroked his first homer of the young collegiate season. He’s now batting .323 in the first eight games and is playing at catcher in most games. …
Another former Elk Grove baseball player, Will Soto, smashed a three-run walk-off home run over the right field fence and the Sacramento State baseball team rallied from a five run deficit to win, 8-7, and sweep Seattle University on Sunday afternoon at the Hornets’ John Smith Field. The dinger was Soto’s first of the year. Former Franklin pitcher Hunter Greenwood, who got the final two outs of the ninth inning, picked up the win in relief. …
Former Sheldon baseball coach Chris Terry is now heading up the program at Eastern New Mexico University. He has two local boys playing for him, Brooke Brooks of Elk Grove and Jordan Vina of Pleasant Grove. …
Pleasant Grove and American River College lefthander Dylan Chavez turned down a chance to sign with the pros last summer and opted to play this season at Ole Miss. Coming out of the bullpen, he’s already made three appearances in the Rebels’ first five games. He has a 4.15 ERA. …
The UC-Santa Barbara women’s softball team has two locals on the roster this spring, both freshmen, Elk Grove’s Shelby Wisdom and Sheldon’s Dejanee Moore. The Gauchos lost ten of their first 11 games of the season, but this last weekend at a tournament they hosted, placed second.
Wisdom, who has started most of Santa Barbara’s games, threw a complete game 8-1 victory over Nevada Sunday. Moore has started all 17 games, most of them at third base, and has a .289 batting average. …
Allie Crump, a former Elk Grove softball star, is pitching about half the games for Boise State in her senior season in college. She’s 3-2 with a 2.62 ERA. Crump plays first base when she’s not pitching and is batting .262 this year.
