Franklin, C-Oaks Win; PG, MT, Bradshaw Lose In Playoff Openers

Franklin's tough defense limited Chavez to only five-for-27 shooting in the first half, had a 19-point lead in the third quarter and then rolled over the Titans, 62-45, to open the Sac-Joaquin Section's Division I playoffs Wednesday.

Benson Osayande led the Wildcats with 14 points while Marvin Timothy tacked on 11, including five quick points to open the third quarter.

Franklin was 21-of-54 from the floor for the game.

The only other local boys' team to win its post-season opener was Cosumnes Oaks, a 64-43 winner over Antelope, in the Division II ranks.

Eric Toles had 22 points to lead the Wolfpack. Alex Van Dyke added 14 and L.J. Reed 13 points.

The big surprise came in Merced where Pleasant Grove had a 25-6 lead over the Bears midway through the second quarter only to see that evaporate. Merced outscored the Eagles 15-2 in the fourth quarter to win, 56-52.

Merced will now play at Franklin Friday night in the Division I second round.

Pleasant Grove was the defending CIF Division I State Champions.

Monterey Trail got behind early to West and couldn't rebound, losing 66-61, ending the season for the fourth-seed Mustangs.

In Division V, Bradshaw Christian lost to ROP/Sierra Ridge, 52-50.
